The mini-castle was actually built without a purpose in 1872 – it’s what the Victorians would call a folly – simply a decoration. And what a decoration it is for Central Park, giving children the idea of a fairytale castle without traveling out of Manhattan. The castle that combines Gothic and Romanesque elements has exhibition rooms and an observation deck – providing beautiful views over Central Park – quite fitting as Belvedere in Italian means beautiful view. It has been used by the National Weather Service to take certain reading from the tower of the castle. It now also has a gift shop and visitor center
