10 Places in New York City Families can Volunteer for Thanksgiving

Only when children interact with the elderly, the disadvantaged, and the poor do they really understand that all human beings deserve love and respect instead of a label. Volunteering brings families together with a common goal in mind allowing children to develop their emotional and social skills while at the same time learning much about life. After a shift spent volunteering to get kids to start their gratitude journals where they think of something to write down that they are grateful for – if they are too young parents can write these things down for them and read them back. This will serve as a wonderful starting point for discussions, and get them journaling every day as they develop a more gracious and grateful attitude to life.

 Feeding NYC

About: Kids are welcome to come along with their parents and get involved in making cards and packing boxes. If you are participating on packing day, each volunteer generally delivers meals to 20 different families, and each team delivers to more than 250 families. You can stay for the entire day or however long your schedule allows (read as, “until the kids get tired”). Packing begins at 5:00 am and ends at approximately 10:00 am. Trucks are loaded after this and depart at 12:00 noon. Selecting an early shift gives volunteers time to go home for their own Thanksgiving dinners. The original idea was to give families in need everything required to prepare a Thanksgiving meal that they could enjoy with family and friends – it started out with 40 meals in 2001 and over 17 years has increased immensely – in all 70, 000 meals have been delivered!
