When patrons like a place they tend to describe it as “the best” – we had a lot of those for the ice cream shops on our list. Each one is doing something a little different to make them unique – whether it’s the service, the flavors, the method of making their frozen treats or simply because they have stood the test of time – a couple of the businesses have been around for more than 90 years!
Jeni’s first Chicago scoop shop opened in September 2013 on Southport Avenue at the Brown Line. This shop features the full line of built-from-the-ground-up ice creams, sorbets, and frozen yogurts that Time magazine called “the best in America”. Jeni’s ice creams have a uniquely smooth texture and buttercream body, with bright flavors and they use no synthetic flavorings, dyes, or off-the-shelf mixes. There is also no long list of stabilizers and emulsifiers on their label as they take the longer and more complex route of building texture and flavor without them.
When: Open Monday to Thursday from 12:00 noon to 11:00 pm, Friday to Sunday from 11:00 am to 11:00 pm.
Where: There are five locations in Chicago – we have given you details of the original shop – check online for the others.
