Black Dog Gelato has been approved by the FDA to manufacture and pasteurize their own gelato base, a key component to a perfect final product – one of only a few area producers to have this approval. All their signature flavors start with their custom liquid base, flavored and matured for 24 hours before being delivered from their Belmont facility to the Black Dog retail outlets for “spinning”. The difference between gelato and ice cream is that more milk than cream is used resulting in less fat, and less air is incorporated resulting in a smoother product. Only gelato made that morning is sold that day. Flavors range form the popular ones that are always in their cases – like Vanilla Sea Salt Caramel and Goat Cheese Cashew Caramel, Blueberry French Toast and Pistachio to the flavors of the month. For August they are Espresso, Sesame Fig Chocolate Chip, and Peach Zabaglione to name a couple. Black Dog Gelato also collaborates with top chefs to produce one-of-a-kind flavors.
