Kids love to color but one 10-year-old girl is using her love of coloring to help others. The Pennsylvania girl started her own charity. Bethany Kuster started collecting crayons and other art supplies to send to schools where they can’t afford them. What started as a simple gesture has turned into an enormous outpouring of kindness.
So how did Bethany come up with the idea? It happened after learning that a fourth-grade class in one of the poorest counties in America had only one box of crayons to share between all the students.
Bethany loves art more than anything,” Bethany’s mother, Rachel Kuster, told a Pennsylvania television station.
That love for art made her mission simple.
“It helps kids express their ideas and feelings” she told a Pennsylvania television station. “So every kid should be able to do that so they don’t keep it inside of them.”
She started by asking her class if they could donate to her colorful idea. In less than three weeks, Bethany and her classmates collected 55 pounds of art supplies and shipped them to a school in Alabama.
Now, her school girl idea is a growing charity called Color of Kids.
Since November, her charity has received donations of more than 60,000 items. The items are not only being donated to schools here in the United States. They are being shipped around the world. One shipment went to help kids in Nepal.
Bethany’s mother is in shock over the response. “Oh that’s mind-blowing. We had no idea. We thought that it was great that she could send supplies to one classroom and then to watch it grow has just been amazing”, she said.
So how does Bethany make all this happen while still in school. Well, the entire school was involved in the project and now she’s enlisted the help of her family and neighbors. The art supplies have taken over the family’s living room. Bethany’s brothers help pack everything up. They even hand deliver some boxes getting a chance to see the students they will be helping.
“I want keep helping as long as I can,” Bethany said. “Every kid should have their own box of crayons.”
Some of the items Color for Kids would like to collect are crayons, markers, construction paper, drawing paper, water colors, paint, paint brushes, colored pencils, scissors, stickers, stencils and glue.
