From chalk art to kite flying, an air show to a hot air balloon fest, there is plenty happening in Atlanta. Halloween and fall festivities will delight the kids, Oktoberfests provide an excuse to polka, and at the Highland Fest, even kids can try tossing a (mini) caber! And Newsies, the hit Broadway musical, comes to Atlanta. It’s fun all the way this month.
About: Chalk-tober Fest sees professional chalk artists decorating the sidewalks. Kids can get in on the action and produce their own mini masterpieces. There will be crafts, food vendors, and a beer fest. The Saturday, October 13 music line up includes Paul Hand Band, Michael Zaib, Brother Whitlock, Alex Guthrie Band, and The Atlanta Lyric. For Sunday, October 14the music is provided by Doug Cameron, Ace Suggs, Power House Dance, and Carlton Kell.
When: Saturday and Sunday, October 13-14 from 10:00 am to 5:00 pm on Saturday and from 11:00 am to 5:00 pm on Sunday.

About: The Georgia State Fair in Hampton, 30 miles south of Atlanta, offers carnival rides, live music, animals, and vendors. See the very rare white tigers, enjoy the petting zoo, pony rides for kids, pig races, planetarium, Hollywood Circus, Nerveless Nocks Thrill Show, Butterfly Encounter and lots more.
When: October 1 – 7(begins September 28). Hours vary per day – check the schedule on the website for details.
Cost:$10 per adult (13 -59) at the gate $5 for youth aged 5-12 and seniors 60+. Children 4 and under free. Ride wristbands, good for unlimited rides on the Midway – $25 for all ages.
About: There is nothing like the tug of a kite in your hands as you guide it in loops and dips. It’s an iconic bonding experience between parents and kids when they first learn to fly a kite. Besides the kite flying, which is the big attraction with all types of kite shapes, colors, and designs, the organizers have live music, food trucks, and beverages. There will be face painting for kids, kite flying demos, kites for sale, and photo booths.
When: Saturday, October 27 from 1:00 pm to 6:00 pm.
Where: Piedmont Park, which runs along 10th Street (a block west of 10th & Monroe Avenue to a block east of 10th & Piedmont Avenue) and Piedmont Avenue (12th & Piedmont to just before 15th & Piedmont) in midtown Atlanta. The park is open daily from 6:00 am until 11:00 pm.
