Visiting or living in New York City can get pretty expensive, but don’t get. The big apple is the best summer place, and there are tons of activities to do where you don’t need to spend tons of money, you just need the right attitude. Do you have it? Age is not important, there are activities for all ages. Follow the list that Kid 101 have put together for you and you will have an amazing time.
1.-Picnic in Central Park: why not enjoy this so-called landmark. The best spot to have a picnic in the middle of New York City. If you like to read, or you are into sports, this huge park is perfect to spend an unforgettable day. Grab a blanket, plan a special meal and you’ll be ready. It’s just fun to stroll around and find all the musicians and different artists that set their scenes at this time of the year. For kids or adults, this is one of the best activities. I will bet, this will be a picnic you would never forget. I know that I have spent countless of hours here with my family, and every time we come for a visit, we find something new and exciting for ourselves.
2.-Meet the big girl, Statue of Liberty for free. Back in 1817 it cost 25 cents to get on the ferry to go to Staten Island. Today is free. You would get to know one of the best views in the world. If you are a tourist or you haven’t had the time to visit the “French” lady, right now is the perfect time to do so. The ferry runs every 30 minutes between 7am and 11pm.
3.-An interesting visit to the farm: get out of Manhattan and learn about farming in Queens, at the Queens County Farm Museum. It’s open to the public, and now it offers an opportunity to get to know some animals at the petting zoo. Here you can learn more about farming vegetables and making wine. Take the train to Queens, and you will find the farm between 73rd Rd and 74th Ave.
4.-Just fun to see: It’s fun just to walk around Time Square. For the kids, it’s a great experience to see all the artists and the different characters they can find around, enjoy stores like Disney, M&M or ToysRus. In the summer, it gets busier as the weather is nice, and everybody comes out for a walk. So don’t be lazy and get some nice pictures around this emblematic place.
5.-Totally art: one of the best neighborhood to just walk around is Chelsea. If you’re into art, this is the best place to do a walking tour in the best galleries, with works from internationally renowned artists. You will find the galleries mostly in the 20s Streets between 10th and 11th Avenues.
6.-A little refreshing: at the Washington Square Park, it is always a nice place to walk the dog, while the kids have some fun. They can enjoy themselves while playing in the water at the fountain. There are always some artists and entertainers around to enjoy a live show. Washington Park is a great place to come, enjoy the day with the family.
7.-Yes, they exist, free tours for all!: the Grand Central Partnership. They offer a free weekly, no reservations, tours around this neighborhood and they provide the best insights of different buildings, including the Chrysler Building and the Grand Central Terminal. Ths is 90 minute walking tour, and it goes every Friday starting at 12:30pm
8.-The incredible American Museum of Natural History: a must see and a place that kids would enjoy no matter how many times you take them there. All the history of different species and the amazing fossils will fascinate them all year around. The entrance is free at the Museum’s last hour (4:45 to 5:45pm) at all other times there is a “suggested price”.
9.-Lonely day?: there is an enormous and beautiful building located at 33 E Broadway. The New York Public Library. If it is one of those days where you don’t know what to do, there are tons of works that you can read for free, what’s your passion? This is a perfect time to learn a little more about it. The library also has free Wifi if you can’t let go of your phone, even in the library.
10.-New York Aquarium: yes, there’s one day you can check out those penguins for free and kids will be grateful to you. From the aqua theater, to the conservation hall, the sea cliffs and the sharks, rays and turtles. All will be waiting for you Fridays from 3pm to close, a time when the New York Aquarium offers free admission. Aquarium is locate in Brooklyn.
11.-Family time at East River State Park: Also known as the Williamsburg Waterfront, is a nice place to spend with the kids, not very fancy, as it’s only water, concrete, and stage; what makes it special is the amazing view it has of Manhattan and the different music and film series that are presented on the summer. Enjoy!
12.-Art and more art: The MOMA (Museum of Modern Art) offers every Friday free entrance; its open until 8pm, but it gets crowded so it is better to arrive by 4:30pm to avoid the lines. This is one of the main museum in New York and is a great place to start a night of fun or to hang out before dinner.
13.-Just walking: The Brooklyn Bridge is one of the best places to walk, its amazing views, and its beautiful structure makes it unforgettable. Completed in 1883, it is the protagonist of tons of pictures and the identity of the Big Apple. This is one of the most romantic walks for couples, and for kids, it’s nice to get the bikes and ride to the other side of the bridge.
14.-Have a drink and have some fun: America is one of the places in the world of the crafted beer. In Manhattan, the Chelsea Brewing company offers free tours with a sample beer. It is Manhattan’s largest microbrewery and a great place to spend some free time. Find it at Chelsea Piers, Pier 59, opens daily from 12pm to 1am, you have to call to book a tour. Cheers!
15.-Plants for fun: Take a walk around the Botanical Garden in East Village. It is one of New York’s best community gardens. Get out of the hassling and bustling of the city for a while and enjoy a stroll around this vibrant green space, with kids, as a couple or alone.
