What follows is a mix of hiking trails – from the very easy where the toddlers and grandparents together with the family pooch can all enjoy the scenery and fresh air- to strenuous hikes that may leave you with vertigo, scratches but an exhilarating thrill when you can say, “I made it!”.
1. Lake Skenonto Circular in Harriman State Park
Roughly an hour’s drive from NYC this hike is rated as moderate. It will take around 5 to 6 hours – depending how long you stop for your picnic lunch along the way and is around 8 miles. The trail can also be reached via public transport from NYC. The hike reaches elevations of 1,500 feet, from which there are breathtaking views and a few rock scrambles so you need to be in reasonable shape and are advised to wear trail shoes. You can take a break and dip in Lake Skenonto, so remember the swimsuit and towel!
