Not everyone can afford expensive summer camps, so now is the time to explore the free options. They are very popular so you may have to apply as early as November 2018 for 2019 camps but there may still be a few vacancies for July and August 2018. Kids will be making friends, learning new skills, and having lots of fun under the supervision of camp counselors, leaving busy parents with a bit of breathing space to plan other free summer activities for the kids before term starts.
About: Through the generous donors to this fund thousands of New York children from low-income families who might not otherwise have a chance can attend five overnight Fresh Air camps on close to 2,000 acres in Fishkill, New York, where they enjoy outdoor activities, make friends, swim, play sports, and unlock their potential. Fresh Air children can also participate in year-round leadership and educational programs. The Fresh Air Fund provides charter bus transportation to and from camp with all buses leaving from either Riverbank State Park or Port Authority Bus Terminal.
These are the five camps in the Fishkill area:
Camp Anita Bliss Coler (ABC) – for girls aged 9 to 12. And for 13-15-year-olds there is the Precious Center for Teen Leadership, inspired by the film Precious
Camp Hayden-Marks – for boys aged 9 to12.
Camp Hidden Valley – for boys and girls with and without special needs, from 8 to 12.
Camp Tommy – for boys aged 12-15. Named in honor of designer Tommy Hilfiger for his dedication and support of Fresh Air children!
Camp Mariah, Career Awareness Camp – for career-focused boys and girls in 7th to 9th grades. Campers commit to year-round activities and summer sessions for three years. Children apply in the 6th grade. Named after Board member Mariah Carey!
