Bring your family to listen to local fourth and fifth-grade students deliver original three-to-five minute speeches answering the question, “What is your dream for today’s world?” Gardere Wynne Sewell LLP law firm continue its tradition of extolling the work and teachings of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. with the 26th annual MLK Jr. Oratory Competitions. Established in 1993 in Dallas and expanded four years later to Houston, this unique event encourages the development of research, writing and oratory skills of hundreds of Dallas and Houston elementary school children. The students’ speeches not only address how Dr. King impacts today’s world but also illustrate how his words continue to affect their lives and inspire their perspectives. In the semifinals, elementary students from 16 Dallas ISDs were judged on delivery, stage presence and decorum, content interpretation and memorization. Finalists on January 12 will receive a monetary award, a participation plaque and other gifts. Children of all ages are welcome to listen to the competition. It’s a great learning experience for the kids to hear more about Martin Luther King.
