A Colorful Hong Kong Tradition Returns To New York. In Celebration of the “Year of the PIG” The 29th Annual Hong Kong Dragon Boat Festival will be a boat fest like none other at the Flushing Meadows-Corona Park. This annual sporting and the multicultural event is held to celebrate the fifth moon or the fifth month of the lunar calendar. In addition to providing audiences with traditional Chinese foods and performances, the festival hosts over 120 dragon boat teams from across North America. Booths located around the main stage area host folk art and craft demonstrations, kids’ storytimes, cultural performances, food and more. The event will feature a parade on opening day and the US Dragon Boat Open Championship Race, the event will also have martial art demonstration by Shaolin Monks, traditional dance, multicultural music, CASYM Steel Orchestra, Photo Contest, activities for kids, demonstrations of traditional Asian folk arts and crafts at booths and taste delicious ethnic cuisine. Festival events consist of several Special/Invitational Cup races. The Municipal Invitational race, featuring various teams from our elected officials,. Other special races include the Senior’s Invitational, Women’s Invitational, Media Challenge and The Educational Invitational. This year’s Corporate Invitational looks to be a good one, with sixteen Corporate Teams joining us to race for their companies. The much-anticipated Charity race goes off this year with 15,000 in the kitty to be split among the competitor’s designated charities. The Festival will be held at Meadow Lake, Flushing Meadows Corona Park, Queens, New York rain or shine. Admission is free.
