Come see how they build Ice Sculpture at
When: Friday, February 1, 2019, from 4:00 pm to 6:00 pm.
Arlene Shechet, the artist of Full Steam Ahead, has collaborated with Shintaro Okamoto, a master ice carver, to bring the apparition of two historical figures back to Madison Square Park, in the form of two large-scale ice sculptures. One will be the female muse, Audrey Munson: situated near Saint-Gaudens’ bronze Farragut and Shechet’s carved wooden figure, this figure’s little-known history as the inspiration for dozens of public statues will be brought back. The other, modelled off the Statue of Liberty’s torch and hand, will recall the presence of this original icon in Madison Square Park from 1876 to 1882 as a fundraising effort. On February 1, 2019, from 4:00 pm to 6:00 pm, Okamoto Studio will be onsite live carving these sculptures, which in the coming days will melt and morph under changing weather conditions, dissolving these figures back into history.
