Chicago is a hot spot for visitors. Every year almost 50 million tourists visit this amazing city. Apart from its popular attractions, there are various hidden gems. If you are someone who wants to get off the beaten path, then here are a few places that you wouldn’t want to miss.
Four sculptors, Roman Villareal, Jose Moreno, Fred Arroyo, and Edfu, picked a hidden spot in 1986 by the waters in Burnham Park to hide a mermaid along the Chicago lakefront.
It took them nine days and nights to secretly sculpt the stone amphibitress, despite being visited by the police multiple times throughout the process.
The unauthorized masterpiece was just a fun local secret during its time in its original location. In 2000, it was discovered by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers during a shoreline restoration.
Later in 20014, the park district put the mermaid in storage, but a group of students worked on a project with the district and brought it back to display in 2007. Oakwood Beach is the home to this sculpted damsel since 2010.
